During 2015 the Nadorcotts were badly affected by snails – the first time ever that we had this type of snail damage on Kruisrivier.

The other cultivars did not seem to attract as many snails as the Nadorcotts and in the past we were fortunate enough to get by with the minimum of intervention. With the Nadorcotts I felt as if I was caught with my pants around my ankles. I had absolutely no idea how to tackle this problem – until Orchard Agri Chemicals came to my help and we started monitoring the snail traps.

The ability to make informed decisions regarding when and where to control the snails, and with which products, was of enormous help. We soon discovered that timing and placement were the most important elements of the programme.

In my opinion, cheaper products are just as effective as expensive ones. At the moment the snails are well under control and we have not seen any damage.

The Slugpro system has made a huge difference to my snail control this year. Because I know exactly where to place the snail bait pellets, I’ve spent a lot less on snail bait pellets than in the past.

The monitoring system has helped me manage the huge variation in snail load in different fields. I don’t think I’ll ever again go into a planting season without it.

The Slugpro programme has helped us enormously in knowing exactly when to apply snail bait pellets. In the past, we just assumed that snails bred in spring. Now that we know exactly when the eggs hatch we also know exactly when and at which stage to apply the snail bait pellets.

These days we also put out snail traps so that we can, with Arnold’s help, monitor snail movement, when the eggs are being laid and when they hatch. We used to have a really bad snail problem, but with the help of Slugpro our snail control system is the best it has ever been.
